Prompt: Write a story in 2 minutes with the starting line: ‘Its the only one I have.’
It’s the only one I have. A beautiful, hand knit doily my grandmother made weeks before her passing. It’s one of a kind. However, I’m not sure what to do with it. What does a person do with a doily? I can use it as a decoration, but then my house will look like a grandmother still lives there. I can try to make it look vintage, and mix it with modern decor. My house can become “grandma-chic”. I’m sure it’ll be beautiful. Or, it’ll be, well, grandma-chic.
I can throw it away, but it’s the last of it’s kind. Who would throw their grandma’s hand-sewn doily away to sit in a trash pile? How disrespectful. How emotionless. How bad for the environment. Unless a bird finds it and makes a nest. But is that what Grandma had in mind?
So, It’s sitting in the bottom of my underwear drawer. Also, probably not what Grandma had in mind. I can move it to the sock drawer, but it’s too small and cluttered for that. I guess, for now, I’ll leave it there and forget about it. You’re welcome, Grandma.
